The more they fight, the more specialized they become in a melee. For example, the more a character runs, the better their stamina usage gets. These characters grow by performing actions rather than amassing generic experience, which reminds me of how CJ developed in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The survivors you encounter and recruit are all playable. This creative twist impressed me, and I would have liked to see more of a focus on this type of gameplay. The change in context makes for a nice change of pace, as does the focus on gunplay when fighting other people. This leads to some interesting engagements as you fight fellow men and women, and the occasional hapless zombie dropping in to cause trouble. Sometimes, however, things go south if you make the wrong choices, putting you at odds with these survivors. In State of Decay 2, you encounter many people who are happy to interact and trade with you, as you go about your business. A few more unique zombie variations would help better maintain my interest. These variations certainly make encounters more interesting, but when combined with the monotony of gathering resources, your adventures across the zombie apocalypse start to feel stale very quickly. Juggernauts take a tremendous amount of abuse, and while slow, they are extremely dangerous to tangle with. Screamers summon more zombies to a zone, Bloaters burst into a toxic mist, and feral zombies crawl and leap at you like rabid dogs. Aside from the standard zombies and infectious variants, a handful of freak zombies shake things up. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if the enemy variety wasn't so limited. As you develop your characters, you unlock a few special attacks to sweep zombies off their feet (or finish them off), but tried and true button mashing is always effective.Ĭombat is engaging, but after a few hours of playing it starts to feel like a grind. There is a beefy selection of weapons to find and use, but ultimately, you mash a button to attack zombies and occasionally hit the dodge button if a zombie is feeling frisky. Bats and pipes have wider sweeping bows, but tend to be slower. Knives and picks are speedy, but only work for targets at extremely close range. You have a basic string of attacks, which vary depending on the weapon you are wielding. Melee combat is rudimentary, though fairly satisfying. You can pop a zombie's noggin off in gruesome fashion with a well-placed headshot, giving even basic weapons a nice, chunky feel. Shooting feels solid, though there is nothing particularly outstanding about the weapons system. Although brutalizing the undead hordes may appeal to some, this survival dynamic can also be fun and thrilling at times. Instead, State of Decay 2's heart lies in expanding and fortifying your base against the ever-present zombie threat and managing a constantly dwindling supply inventory. Keep in mind, though, that zombie hunting is not the game's focus. Once you establish your base camp, you can start venturing for supplies across the zombie-infested environment. You start the game with only a handful of survivors, but you can recruit others as you progress. The more you develop your base, the more materials you need, which pushes you back out into the world to search for more supplies, ad infinitum. ![]() The game is essentially a zombie-infested supply hunt, in which you explore derelict buildings surrounding your base in search of materials, weapons, and food. Unfortunately, State of Decay 2 is highly repetitive and buggy, which dampens the potential enjoyment.Īt the core of State of Decay's gameplay is the constant push to collect supplies for your base. As for gameplay, the combat is quite enjoyable, if a bit simplistic, and the multiplayer co-op offers some fun and exciting scenarios. You must be both resourceful and aggressive to make headway in the game, as there is little you can do to quell the ever-present zombie threat as you venture into the wild for materials to keep your party healthy and happy. ![]() State of Decay 2 is a survival game that drops you and a ragtag group of zombie apocalypse survivors in an undead-riddled open world.
